News

The Ultimate Collection of News Links
Title says it all. This site contains almost all possible links to any foreign news papers and/or magazines. Very helpful if you don't know where to begin a search for info on any particular country.
Foreign News Links
A some what easier link to foreign news links. This site enables you to find information on your country of choice via the alphabet.
Newspapers-Electric Library
News link via the source of information (i.e. Newspapers, Magazines, Transcripts, Photographs and Maps). Very useful if looking for specific info from a specific sourse, (i.e. a photograph or map).
Newspapers within the United States
Very helpful site if you are looking for information from a newspaper that is published within the United States. Your search is narrowed by a selecetion of states. This link, for newspapers within CA, has all newspapers from the LA Times to the Beirut News.
Internet City Newstand
Compared to other sites (i.e. The Ultimate Collection of News Links and Foreign News Links), this site link seems to be very limited. I didn't find it too helpful nor interesting.
USA TODAY
USA Today Home page. Very useful for new information. It gives you the option of reading the summary or the whole story.
San Francisco Chronicle on The Gate
Compared to the LA times, this newspaper site is more "down to earth". Though the information may be of equal importance, the style used in reporting the story appeals to someone my age, the average twenty-something . . .
The Washington Times-Front Page
Though this site may not be useful to someone studying Contemporary World Affairs, it would be very useful to someone studying Domestic Affairs. This site is based on Domestic Politics ranging [today 12/17/97] from Clinton's stand of Affirmative Action to a possible investigation into former Secretary Ron Browns death in 1996.
My Virtual Reference Desk - My Virtual Newspaper
The most interesting News link yet! This site has it all, a link to worldwide news, domestic news and magazines and a link to college newspapers.
Internet Resources for Political Science, Public Administration
This site is a great choice for poli sci students. It has links to everything from political news, political parties, foreign governments, and much more.

Activism Page
Blacklist of Internet Advertisers
I found this site via a link named George. I thought that it may have been a link the J.F.K. Jr. news magazine George, but instead I was lead to a blacklist of Internet advertisers.
PBS Online
A great link to possible sources about almost everything that you would ever need information on. From science to world and U.S. history. Possible info not only found through the internet, but also through PBS on your television.
Weekly Ink
Though I found this site very interesting and entertaining, it would be of no use to the political science student. It is more oriented with fashion and entertainment rather than political news.

General Politics

Forbes Four Hundred - Index by Worth - Top 50
Useless. Of no importance to the average political science student, as myself.
ANU - 1995 Best Soc.Sci WWW Resources

The Ultimate Collection of News Links
Very helpful with International news. Some papers are updated more than otthers. Good variety of papers in each country to choose from, for example on The Ukraine and Nepal. They were also in English which was helpful..

Very good source.
The Rising Nepal (Features: 17th Dec. 1997)
This was very informative and updated. The format was like a regular U.S. paper with sections to choose to
Foreign News Links
Good variety, but for an English speaker who cannot read other languages, this isn't the source you'ld prefer. Many papers are in the countries language.
CIA Publications
this interesting because I never had a chance before to explore a site like this before. Fun, aswell as educational. Good info on countries around the world background.
Newspapers within the United States
Very good source for american and local news. Excellent variety to choose from. Not every paer is p[rintedbut the ones that are , are informative .

San Francisco Chronicle on The Gate
The internet format is somewhat similair to the L.A. TIMES format. Good.
Internet City Newstand
This offers a small variety of papers and magazines locally and internationally. Not the greatest source for this class.

Understanding the Federal Courts
Tiller, p.66, paragraph 1

"The distinguishing characteristic of capitalism as an economic system is private ownership of property."
The federal courts, in contrast, have power to decide only those cases over which the Constitution gives them authority.
The federal courts in the United States is one part of the checks and balances instituted by our founding fathers in the Constitution. Under this capitalistic society we respect the right for individuals to own private property and businesses.
Russia Today - Web News
Tiller, p.67, paragraph 2

"The distinguishing characteristic of socialism as an economic system is public (or government, or state) ownership of property."
MOSCOW, March 3 — In the past year or so the Russian attitude toward NATO expansion has evolved from fierce opposition to grudging acceptance.
The expansion of NATO members to the once Warsaw Pact members are bothersome to Russia. The admission of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, and Poland means that Russian dominance will soon come to an end.
Socialist Party
Tiller,p.68, paragraph 4

"Rather than relying on the profit motive to guide the economy, socialists advocate a planned economy in which the government makes investments to meet social needs on a "rational" basis, according to socialists."
The Socialist Party is a revolutionary socialist organisation which has links with similar organisations in twenty-six countries world wide through our international, the Committee for a Workers international (CWI).
Many socialist economies immerse themselves in planned economies. Whatever good comes from working as a whole benefits the society.
The Getty Sullies Itself With Ethnic Politics
The ideology of the artist, David Alfaro Siqueiros, is Marxism. During the 1920's he had visited Communist Russia and was considered a revolutionary during his time. Siqueiros brought back with him Marxist ideologies and expressed them in a mural painting in the United States where it was whitewashed. People who are against the restoration of the painting do not see the reason why so much money is used for this project when there are so many other projects to fund.

In Tiller, page 25, paragraph 2 , Siqueiros is considered to be a "leftist"or "left-winger."
"Leftists favor more drastic or radical change and are sometimes called radicals- a term that over a century ago came to refer to socialists, communists, and anarchists.
Siqueiros is considered a revolutionary, and by Tiller's definition, a person who wants more than radical reform but to change the whole outlook of the government.
List Including Getty Story
Letters to the editor and opinions are voiced in a variety of different topics.
Liberals Agree With Merger
Tiller, page 10, paragraph 3

"Liberals generally favor changes, or reforms. They tend to believe in positive government-that government can and should help promote social progress."
Banks merge for two reasons: to reduce costs, which can be good, and to reduce competition, which is always bad.
Conservatism In Regressive Change
Tiller, page 11, paragraph 1

"When conservatives advocate change, it is usually regressive change; that is, they want to regain something good that was previously lost."
Drawing on the words of his father, former president Ronald Reagan, Michael Reagan presents the blueprint for rebuilding his father's vision for America in the next millennium.
This website gives the reader an overall view of Ronald Reagan's view on how the American public should strengthen family values and restore faith in God to build America.
Conservatives History
Tiller, page 10, paragraph 3

"Conservatives are more reluctant to endorse change and tend to favor the status quo (the existing condition).
This homepage recognizes the women of the nineties that are successful in today's business. Conservatives in American past history have been against working mothers and women's suffrage. During the American Revolution from Great Britain women were not allowed to vote or even work outside of the home. Conservatives did not advocate change in our past history.

YCL Frequently Asked Questions
This site is for the Young Communist League.

"Q: Rich people deserve to be rich because they work harder. Why should they give up their money?
A: Capitalists gain their wealth from the labor of others--not from their own work. The workers who actually create the alth-by picking the crops or assembling the ngines, for example-should get a fair share of the wealth they create. Why should someone be a millionaire, with three houses, a private plane, and the like when other folks can't even afford enough to eat? "
This is a direct reference to P. 105 in Tiller. Under "Communism" second paragraph. It goes into detail of Marx's View on material wealth.
Greenpeace International Information
"Greenpeace is an independent, campaigning organisation which uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and to force the solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future.."

This is direct reference to The chapter on "ENVIORONMENTLISM" Chapter 10 starting on Page 130. It summarizes what Enviornmentalist are and believe in. The page further gives you link if you wish to go in depth.
NORML - Working to Reform Marijuana Laws
" About NORML

NORML is a nonprofit lobby working to end marijuana prohibition and stop arrests of smokers. The NORML Foundation, a sister nonprofit, sponsors educational, research and legal projects to help the public better understand marijuana policy. "
This is in direct reference to the P. 85 Under "Social Liberty" It shows 'Rousseau' idea of "they had the right to reject their rulers and illegitimate laws to which they had not consented."
Sharon Statement
"We, as young conservatives, believe:

That foremost among the transcendent values is the individual's use of his god-given free will, whencederives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force;
That liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom;
That the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice;
That when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty; "
This exerpt from the "Sharon Statemen" is a reference to P. 91. It fully demonstrates "Disagreement about page and extent of change."

The Getty Sullies Itself With Ethnic Politics
The Getty institute wants to revise a 1932 mural which was painted by Marxist painter David Alfero Sigueiros. The mural on Alvera Sreet was white washed by city leaders in 1932 because it had a poor Mexican crucified with an American egale a top of the cross. Sigueiros says that the resons the mural was painted was because of the times America was going through with the depression and the other proplems around the world. His views as a Marxist saw that that imperialist where oppressing the poor and that is why he painted a poor person on a crucifix.

The writer of the artical sees that bringing the mural back for just the spite that people of various organizations are calling the city leaders racist is wrong, his view seems to be in a conservative state he dosn't like the idea of Totalitarian view should be brought back into the arts

Multilateral Agreement on Investment
Tiller, p.53, paragraph 2

"Pluralism as an idiology values a wide diversity of freely competing interests-interests that compete for political power."
Pluralism refers to many sources of power that deal directly with the formation of political power. Democracy is the backbone of these ideas.
With the Multilateral Agreement on Investment soon to be made law internationally, many fear that monopolies will form out of them. Foreign companies not allowed to invest in America will soon be competing with domestic companies.
The ideas in pluralism directly link it with the Multilateral Agreement on Investment because of the main idea of the agreement.
The agreement favors a great number of diverse countries competing in the same market.
North Korea Politics
Tiller,p53, paragraph 3

"Authoritarianism promotes a concentration of power in the hands of a few. Authoritarians do not want diversity of opinion."
In North Korea they promote the ideology of authoritarian rule. The government till today has remained the concentration of political power. Since the Korean War, North Korea rejects any foreign aid in fear that outside influences will bring down the regiment in power.
Canada: Constitutional Acts 1867-1982
Tiller, p.56, paragraph 4

"Republicanism is the ideology of indirect, or representative, democracy. Citizens participate by voting for their representatives, signing petitions..."
In Canada people openly participate and have the right to vote for their representatives. They promote leaders that represent the communities they live in.
Representatives act as delegates to impose the people's wishes on the government. The best wishes of the people are represented through them.
Cuban Protagonists
Tiller ,p.61 paragraph 2

"If other political parties are allowed to exist at all, they are usually constrained by unfair electoral rules that make it impossible to challenge the ruling party."
In Cuba the government under Castro is unlikely to publish anything not censored by the government. Castro's regiment is protective about what their country reads and what is distributed in fear of democracy being spread throughout the region.
THE UN IN BRIEF
Tiller, p. 57, paragraph 2

"The framers of the U.S. Constitution favored republicanism, not direct democracy: that is , they created a system whereby the mass public would elect representatives..."
The representatives in the United Nations are elected by the people and are expected to make decisions that affect the whole country. United Nation representatives have their own checks and balances within their own system of government. They deal mainly with human rights and violations of these rights.

This is the article dealing with the restoration of the revolutionary Marxist mural created by David Alfaro Siqueiros in 1932, in Los Angeles. Shortly after the painting was done, it was whitewashed and now The Getty Conservation Institute is putting in $1 million for restoration project. The reason why it was whitewashed is because the painting appealed to a crude ethnic and class divisiveness. The artist who painted this controversial painting, David Alfaro Siqueiros was a Marxist. Marxism is a socialist ideology that became powerful and revolutionary force mainly because of the German philosopher, Karl Marx. Marxism is theory that is based on the philosophical principles of dialectics and materialism.

Romero3 (on MAI)

The OECD Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI)
The world's richest industrialized countries are negotiating a treaty on foreign investment that will give more power to big corporations. It is called the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI).The agreement gives new rights to multinational corporations (MNCs) and rich foreigners. By going out of its way to knock down 'barriers' to foreign investment, the MAI would put up new barriers to our democratic right to regulate our local affairs in ways that make good economic and environmental sense. The MAI, as the definition indicates, covers stocks, bonds, intellectual property rights, concessions, etc. So anything a government does that affects any of these 'assets' could be challenged under the MAI. Environmental controls on foreign-owned factories, restrictions on international financial speculation, and many other kinds of regulations all have to submit to the agreement's standards.Governments can't require foreign corporations to meet certain performance requirements, or conditions, even if these conditions are imposed on local companies. The MAI bars countries from putting restrictions on excessive flows of money into or out of their economies. These rapid flows can damage an economy, whether rich or poor, like it did to the value of the Mexican peso. By defining expropriation to include indirect expropriations, the MAI opens a new door for foreign investors to extend the battle over takings outside our normal political and legal process, where at least both sides have the right to be heard, into the one-sided MAI system. Giving no power to the people. The MAI doesn't give citizens any rights.there are no binding obligations on foreign investors that citizens, or even governments, can enforce through the MAI's dispute resolution rules. The MAI would forbid governments from applying these types of laws to foreign

businesses, which would create a double standard penalizing U.S. companies that do the right thing by not investing in
dictatorships. One of the main purposes of the agreement is to reach a consensus among industrialized countries, and use the MAI to pressure developing nations to
'open their economies' and change foreign investment laws. If developing countries sign the MAI, people in rich and poor countries could both lose. The MAI will give corporations more rights and confidence to
leave the US and other high wage countries, speeding up their move overseas in search of cheap labor. And developing
countries will have signed an agreement they did not help draft, and lose the ability to attach conditions to new foreign
investment. Most international treaties require six months notice if a country wants to drop out. The MAI goes farther.
A country that signs the agreement can't escape until at least five years have passed from the time the country ratified the MAI.
Then, the MAI's rules stop covering new foreign investment, but existing foreign investment still get to use the MAI for fifteen
more years. This is because the MAI is more concerned with promoting long-term investor confidence than it is with our democratic right to change our minds, and change our laws.

M.A.I. Information Centre: Introduction and Contents
The MAI Information Centre is a valuable source of information on the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI). It offers information on both sides of the spectrum. Proponents of the MAI, including The U.S Council for International Business, The National Association of Manufacturers and The European-American Chamber of Coomerce, say that the MAI will protect international investors against discrimination from countries where they do business. Opponents of the MAI, mainly environmental, labor, consumer and women's groups, say that the MAI will make international investors above the law, allowing them to violate environmental safeguards imposed by the governments of sovereign nations.

In his explanation, September 14, 1960 Sen. John F. Kennedy determined that "government has no business either supporting or opposing religion"
"According to liberals all people are equal without considering religion, sex or race differences. They believe that the government is not a guardian of social norms because it would be then a limiting of personal choices and freedom. Liberals promote liberty"
