Description: The process of human development from conception through
adolescence is studied. Emphasis is placed on development which enables
one to reach physical, mental, emotional and social maturity.
Child Development 2 - Early Childhood Principles and Practices - 3

Recommended for those interested in professions involving children
Description: This is a survey course of early childhood education. Current
practices and philosophies are compared. Developmentally appropriate curricula,
current issues and assessment of learning environments are discussed. The
personal characteristics of early childhood educators and opportunities for
careers in the field are studied.
Child Development 3 - Creative Experiences for Children I - 3 units

Description: The philosophy of developing creative activities for preschool and
middle years children is explored through hands-on experiences using numerous
media.
Child Development 4 - Creative Experiences for Children II - 3 units

Description: Many types of creative experiences for young children are
explored. Science experiences, food and nutrition, language, mathematics,
environment and social development are included. The student has an
opportunity to plan and implement materials to be used in a classroom setting.
Child Development 5 - Puppetry I - 3 units

This course is recommended for teachers and others working with young children.
Description: Demonstrates puppetry as a medium to assist the teacher in working
with children in the areas of social development, emotional expression and
creative drama. Practical techniques for teachers and other related
professionals to include performances based on children's literature and
creative puppet shows. Includes construction and manipulation of various
types of puppets.
Child Development 10 - Child Health - 3 units

Recommended for those interested in working with young children in a normal or
special setting.
Description: This course includes information on the physical and mental well
being of children, including childhood disease and special health
problems. Community resources available to assist in the healthy development
of the child are explored. First aid and CPR American Red Cross
certificates given.
Note: This class satisfies the 15 hour California Child Care Health and Safety
Training requirements.
Child Development 11 - Home, School and Community Relations - 3

Description: This course asks students to define their personal ethics within
the context of a contemporary society. It deals with the dynamics of oppression
in the home, school and community including racism, classism, and sexism.
Tools will be given for implementing non-sexist, non-racist curriculum for
young children. Cultural differences will be examined.
Child Development 12 - Parent-Teacher-Child Interaction - 3 units

Lecture 3 hours per week
Description: Emphasis is placed on familiarizing students with techniques used
in parent-teacher conferences. Techniques such as role playing and personal
interviews are utilized to give the student confidence in working with parents
and their specific problems. Basic communication skills are discussed.
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting(STEP) is studied.
Child Development 22 - Practicum in Child Development I - 4 units

Prerequisites: Child Development 1, and 3 units from Child Development 3 or 4
with a grade of "C" or better; TB test.
Lecture 2 hours and laboratory 6 hours per week.
Description: Students observe and teach pre-school children under direction of
a nursery school staff member for a minimum of six hours per week.
Emphasis is placed on developing, implementing and evaluating classroom
experiences for young children.
Child Development 23 - Practicum in Child Development II - 4 units

Description: This course involves advanced supervised practicum in an Early
Childhood Education Program. The student will demonstrate the use of all
previous coursework in a field setting.

Description: This course includes development from birth through 3
years. It provides information on teaching techniques, curriculum
development and implementation, principles of caregiving, environmental design
and observational opportunities.
Child Development 36 - Children's Literature/Story telling - 1 unit

Description: A review of traditional and contemporary literature will enable
students to identify the functions of children's literature. Students will
analyze a wide variety of books to address issues of age, gender, ethnicity,
race, disability and social development.
Child Development 38 - Administration and Supervision of Early
Childhood Programs I - 3 units

Lecture 3 hours per week
Description: Course provides an understanding of the principles and practices
necessary to run an Early Childhood Education Program. State of
California licensing regulations, fiscal planning and management, personnel
management, child abuse recognition and reporting requirements, and brochure
development are some of the important topics covered. Professionalism and
quality standards are emphasized.
Child Development 39 - Administration of Early Childhood Programs II

Description: Course provides an in depth study of finances, including grant and
proposal writing. Licensing requirements for a wide variety of children's
programs will be explored. Risk management and disaster preparedness for
children's programs will be discussed. Other topics covered include advocacy,
staff development, professionalism as well as current trends in child
development.
Child Development 42 - The Child in a Multi-cultural Society - 3

Description: This course is designed to enhance a teacher's sensitivity to and
knowledge of cultural diversity. Appropriate multicultural instructional
resources will be offered. Meaningful curriculum activities and
experiences will be developed. Students will be introduced to creative
ethnic materials in the areas of art, language, music, literature, dramatic
play, foods, etc.
Child Development 45 - Programs for Exceptional Children - 3 units

Description: This introductory course studies specific classifications and
special characteristics of exceptional children. Current information on
legislation for the special child is discussed. Mainstreaming, early
identification, individualized education programs, and curriculum approaches
are studied. Observation of the exceptional child is also included.

Description: This course includes an overview of the development of children
5-13 years. Emphasis is placed on
meeting the developmental needs of the
school age child and planning of appropriate curricula.
Child Development 60 - Introduction to Family Child Care I - 1 unit

Lecture 2 hours per week (9 week program)
Description: This course is designed for family child care providers and
persons entering the profession. Focus is placed on business and
environmental considerations, age-appropriate activities for mixed age groups,
communication with parents, and community resources. Field study of
accredited programs is included.
Child Development 61 - Introduction to Family Child Care II - 1 unit

Description: This course is designed for family child care providers and
persons entering the profession. Focus is on business management which
includes business law, insurance, budget, contracts and record keeping,
taxes, and marketing and advertising procedures.
Child Development 62 - Developmental Profiles: Pre-Birth through 8

Description: This course defines concise profiles of physical, emotional,
social and intellectual development from pre-birth through age eight. It
also reviews the most commonly encourntered terms and concepts in child
development literature.
Child Development 63 - Creative Curriculum in a Family Child - 2

Description: This course is designed for family child care providers and
persons entering the profession. Emphasis is on play and creative
experience in the home setting for children. Demonstration of and participation
in dramatic play, manipulative, music, math, art, crafts, science, cooking and
language are included.

Family and Consumer Studies 21 – Nutrition – 3 units

Description: The importance of diet to health is
emphasized. The functions,
sources, and interrelationships of nutrients are explored. Current topics related to diet and
health such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, weight control,
and sports nutrition are discussed.
Students evaluate their nutritional status by computer and body fat
composition is assessed.
