Public Comment
Fliers were distributed highlighting CDs that commemorate the life and work of Igor Gregoriev, which are now on sale.
Ms. Fasteau reported that the learning center will be open through winter break to provide students with additional opportunities to review for placement testing, or study to improve skills in math and English. Dates and hours will be announced.
Consent Items
Unanimous consent to appoint Joyce Parker and Brad Young as Senate representatives on the selection committee for the vice presidency of economic development.
Administration Report
Mr. Martinez updated the Senate on this year's FON status.
He also proposed that the building master plan be revisited in terms of correlating remaining construction with what that will make the new de facto "front" of the campus.
Finally he shared his conviction that at the heart of our educational master plan must be a student success program integrating in a clear, effective way everything we are currently doing for student success with new district and state initiatives such as Achieving the Dream.
He hopes this will emerge in part from our next college summit, to be held on February 3, when the climate survey will be taken in addition and we will also extend our commitment to completing a first-rate accreditation self-study.
ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION/FUTURE ACTION
New deanship
Dean Humphreys discussed differing ways of administering our efforts for essential skills. He does not believe they need to be consolidated in a single department; he does believe they require a single responsible administrator such as an assistant dean of academic success for student success, whose position could be funded from grant accounts for at least two years. Considerable discussion followed as to the various considerations involved. Mr. Martinez suggested that we should agree on our student success focus through the February summit before we decide the supervisory structure implementing that focus will require. District Administrative Hiring Guidelines
Ms. J. Smith drew the Senate's attention to the draft proposal now being circulated incorporating responses to District Academic Senate concerns.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 3:03, on the understanding that a meeting for December 16 will or will not be scheduled at the discretion of the Senate president.
