Graduation ceremony 2015
- Regular Graduates wear Blue Caps and Gowns
- Nursing Graduates wear White Caps and Gowns
- No smoking or alcoholic beverages allowed. Inebriated students will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.
- Bags, balloons, horns, and beach balls will not be allowed in the Graduates’ seating area.
- Students must stay until the end of the ceremony.
- On May 7th from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. there will be a Graduation Fair in the PE Grassy Quad. This will be the event where Graduates can receive discounts on their caps and gowns, have Graduation portraits taken, visit with University representatives, participate in the Shout-Out Video, order class rings, sashes, ceremony dvds, and pre-purchase items from vendors.
- There will be a Pre-Ceremony Reception for graduates and their guests on June 11th at 12:30 p.m. in the Science Complex Quad, near Parking Lot # 6.
- The Graduation Ceremony is on Thursday, June 11th at 3:00 p.m. in the Seahawk Football Stadium.
- No strollers, umbrellas, or balloons are allowed inside the football stadium.
- Disabled seating is available on the South side of the stadium.
- There is a No Smoking policy for the entire LAHC Campus.
- No outside food or drink is allowed in the football stadium. There is a snack bar available to purchase water, coffee, sodas, snacks, and gifts for the graduates on the South side of the stadium.
- It is suggested that guests wear sunscreen and dress for the warm weather.
- Flowers and other Graduation items will be sold by only authorized vendors at the Ceremony. Flowers can be pre-ordered at (310) 378-1018.
- Parking is available in all open lots at no charge. No parking is allowed in staff parking spaces. The Sheriffs' Department will be patrolling all lots and will ticket any cars that are illegally parked. It is suggested that cars do not park in the city lot across from the college. They will be charging for parking and after the ceremony ends, those parking in the campus lots will have priority in exiting.
- The ceremony usually lasts around ninety minutes in length.
The Commencement (Graduation) Ceremony recognizing the Summer/Fall 2014/Spring 2015 graduates will be held on Thursday, June 11th at 3:00 p.m. at the LAHC Seahawks’ Football Stadium. Tickets are not required for the ceremony and seating is available until the field reaches capacity.
The ceremony will be a celebration to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of our graduates as they complete their studies at Harbor College.
Prior to the ceremony there will be a Pre-Ceremony Reception at 12:30 p.m. in the Science Complex Quad, near Parking Lot # 6. All graduates, family, faculty, and staff are invited to attend and help kick off the Graduation festivities.

Order of Events
Processional: The college ceremony will begin with an academic procession. The platform party will be led by LAHC President Otto Lee. The faculty and staff, led by Susan McMurray, Academic Senate President and William Hernandez, Academic Senate Vice President will follow. The Graduates' procession will be led by two faculty marshals with the President's Distinguished Honorees taking their seats near the stage. The Graduates will march into the stadium and take their seats.
The processional will then be followed by a program that includes the National Anthem, greetings from college and district dignitaries, selected speakers, and recognition of the President’s Distinguished honorees.
After the program Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 Graduates and Spring 2014 Candidates will be escorted to the stage where their names will be announced and they will receive a diploma case.
The ceremony concludes with America the Beautiful and the recessional.
Recessional: You will exit the ceremony in reverse order. The platform party will exit first, followed by the faculty, and then the marshals will lead the graduates to exit, row by row. Remain standing until your row is cleared for exiting.
Los Angeles Harbor College is very proud of your achievement. We understand exactly what this accomplishment means to you and to your future, and so we recognize what the diploma represents to you and just how important actually seeing and holding the diploma is both to you and your family. Additionally, we know that you want to offer the diploma to prospective employers as proof of your graduation. And so, you are anxious to receive your diploma as soon as possible.
Yet, there are several items that we ask you to acknowledge. As you can imagine, final semester faculty grading, college degree requirements review and certification, Admissions’ Office certification processing, and diploma preparation and printing each require significant time to accomplish. Keep in mind that everyone involved is working quickly to certify not only your degree and to provide your diploma, but to certify the degrees and produce the diplomas for all of your fellow graduates for this year.
The full degree certifications/diplomas preparation process for all graduates requires approximately ten (10) weeks after the end of the semester. Occasionally, longer processing time is required.
You probably now are thinking, "At least ten weeks? How about my upcoming job interview? How will I prove that I am a graduate?"
First, you should know that the diploma is an ornamental document intended solely for your private use. The diploma is a brilliant symbol of your accomplishment; you should display it proudly to family and friends.
But the diploma does not serve the same purpose as the transcript which is intended to serve as official college document certifying your degree award to interested 3rd parties such as employers. The diploma is not intended either to function as or replace the transcript. And so, the college does not encourage you to submit the diploma to prospective employers, but prefers that you provide them with an official transcript.
Diplomas are not distributed at Commencement. Graduates and Candidates attending the ceremony will only receive a diploma case during the commencement exercises. Your diploma will not automatically be mailed to you. After the Admissions’ Office verifies that the candidate has met the requirements for a degree, the graduate will receive an email when the diploma will be available for pickup. Note: Only Graduates who attend the ceremony will receive a diploma case.
Commencement Program Book
The names of those who received degrees in Summer and Fall 2014 and those who applied for graduation in Spring 2015 by the deadline dates noted in the Schedule of Classes will appear in the program. If a candidate does not want his/her name, degree and honor (if any) listed in the program, contact Mary Vargas at (310) 233-4225 before May 7, 2015.
All graduates and guests will receive a program at Commencement. After the ceremony, copies of the program will be available while quantities last at the Admissions Office beginning June 22, 2015.
To ensure that no damage is done to the track and for the safety of our students, Graduates are only allowed to wear flat shoes for the rehearsal and ceremony.
NO WEDGE OR SPIKY HEELS of any type will be allowed.
Graduates may bring their shoes to rehearsal if they are unsure of what “flat shoes” means or view the unapproved/approved shoe flyers on this website. The Sheriffs' Department staff will be checking all shoes before the Graduate is allowed to walk in the ceremony and will not allow a graduate to participate if their shoes are considered heels.
Helpful Hint: The Bookstore recommends that you open your gown and hang it up in your shower to steam the wrinkles out. Do not try to iron it!
Official Graduation Sash
Pre-order your official Los Angeles Harbor College Commencement Sash to wear and remember this special occasion for years to come. Purchase your own beautiful royal blue sash by completing the order form and dropping off it off with payment at the Grad Fair for only $ 30.00. Due to the production schedule, no orders will be taken after May 7th.
While preparing for the procession to begin, position the tassel on your mortarboard (cap) on the right side. Towards the end of the ceremony you will be instructed to switch the tassel from the right to the left side of your cap. When marching in the recessional the tassel will be on the left side to signify that you are a graduate.
Commencement Conduct and Expectations
Disruptive or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. The rules below will be enforced at each of the ceremonies.
The Grad Fair is the Graduates opportunity to take a graduation portrait with Ultimate Exposures. The studio will be on campus for the Grad Fair and will be scheduling appointments on campus in April, May and June.

Ultimate Exposures, the official 2015 Los Angeles Harbor College Commencement Ceremony photographer, will be on the field taking pictures of the candidates as they receive their diploma. However, Los Angeles Harbor College recognizes that many people will want to take their own pictures on this momentous occasion. Guests are welcome to bring cameras to the ceremony, but please remain in your seat and be mindful not to disturb those around you.
Commencement is one of life’s most memorable events.
Get your official Los Angeles Harbor College Commencement DVD to remember this special occasion for years to come. The DVD features your college ceremony, including the procession of the graduates, speakers, on-stage presentations and awarding of diplomas.
Pre-order the DVD by completing the order form and turning it in with your payment at the Grad Fair for only $ 20.00.
Orders will also be taken at the ceremony for $ 25.00.
DVDs will be available for pick up at the college approximately three weeks following the ceremony or can be mailed at an additional cost.
Campus parking is free for all Commencement activities. Participants and their guests are urged to enter the campus from at “L” Street and Figueroa Place.
Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis, therefore we urge all attendees to arrive early, and carpool or use public transportation that makes stops on the campus.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Sheriffs will direct traffic in an orderly manner to exit the campus.
The City of LA lot across from the campus will be charging for parking and will be the last lot to be cleared by the Sheriffs.
Guests attending the Commencement ceremony should go directly to the LAHC Seahawks Football Stadium, after attending the Pre-Ceremony Reception, to be seated and await the start of the academic procession. Guest seating is available on a first come - first serve basis. The entrance gates will open at approximately 1:30 p.m. with the South bleachers being open first. Once those are filled, the North bleachers will be open for seating.

Contact the Special Programs and Services Office at (310) 233-4536by May 22, 2015 for assistance with both the procession and seating. An American Sign Language interpreter is located on stage during all commencement ceremonies. If you require seating near the interpreters, please contact the Special Programs Office.
A section of the seating area on the South bleachers will be reserved for spectators with disabilities. The designated sections are located at the North bleachers. Staff from Special Programs and volunteers will be available at the entrance to assist disabled guests to their seating.
Guests with a DMV disabled person parking placard or disabled person plates must display the placard/plates upon entering the campus. Officers will direct them to park in designated lots in close proximity to the ceremony.
Persons needing special assistance are encouraged to arrive one hour before the commencement ceremony.
Parking lot # 5, located behind the North bleachers is designated for disabled guests parking.
Note: All vehicles must have DMV disabled person parking placards to park in this lot. It is the responsibility of the graduating student to survey routes to the event area before Commencement and inform guests who may have a disability of what to expect.
If your guests require a wheelchair, please make sure arrangements are made on your own according to specific needs. There are ramps on the South bleachers to make accessibility easier for guests.
