How to Succeed in College: Time Management

Setting and Keeping Goals for College Success

Come to this workshop to be introduced to the “magic” of goal setting. Learn about short-term, medium-term and long-term goal setting and planning for your future. Learn how to take big goals like “becoming a nurse,” or “owning my own business someday” and break them down into manageable, achievable steps. One step at time, one day at a time you can achieve your dreams!

Overcoming Procrastination

Going to college involves many important deadlines, starting with deadlines for registering for a class, dropping a class, withdrawing in a timely manner so as not to negatively impact your cumulative record, as well as the timing of term papers and studying for exams. Many people struggle with the very human tendency to put off until “later” working on tasks which cause us to feel anxious or overwhelmed…often until it’s too late! Join us for this workshop if you’d like to learn how to overcome this self-defeating habit and meet the important deadlines in your life.
Coping with Depression

Recent research on college students indicates that close to 50% of college students experience depression at some time during their college years and feel so depressed at some points that they have trouble functioning. Left untreated, depression can lead to suicide. Depression is serious but help is available. Please attend this workshop if you or someone you love may be experiencing depression. We’ll teach you how to recognize the signs and symptoms and what to do about it to start feeling better and functioning again.

Making and Sticking with a Budget

Creating and staying on a budget, using the new financial aid debit card wisely, saving and shopping for bargains are some key aspects of “financial literacy” and will be the focus of this workshop. Get control over your finances, stay out of debt, come learn the basics.

We’ll cover the “do’s” and “don’ts” in making a good impression and sustaining your instructor’s appreciation of you as a person and a student. Come learn about ways to have constructive, positive, successful relationships with all your teachers.

Learning to keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings, plans and dreams can be a great benefit to your college success. Research has shown that expressing yourself freely and frankly, just for yourself is a great stress reliever and can help in so many other ways. You can work on your writing, discover your own path and gain the benefit of stress reduction though this form of self-expression.

The news seems to be filled these days with scary stories of students being harassed by other students as well as other angry, destructive exchanges on Facebook and other social media sites. In this workshop we’ll focus on how to protect and defend yourself against some of the worst aspects of this negative behavior as well as find positive, constructive ways to related to friends and acquaintances in the sometimes wild and untamed world of social media.

Substance Abuse, Drinking and Alcohol

The workshop follows an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Screening Day, co-sponsored by the ASO and the Life Skills Center. If you found out or believe that you might be having a problem with alcohol or substance over use or abuse, come talk with a Life Skills Center counselor in a confidential and supportive atmosphere to discuss ways to tackle this challenge and get the help and support you need to reduce harm and stop drug and alcohol abuse in yourself or someone you love.
Communicating Cross Culturally

Just because we share a common language does not mean that we share a common cultural background. Can we all get along? Yes! We can! Developing cultural awareness allows us to recognize key differences in ethnicity, religion and life style and guides us in how to comfortably bridge these differences and develop tolerance for diversity among the people we interact with daily.

How you feel about yourself is the road map you use to make all your decisions in life: from the really big decisions about what career you want to have to the smaller ones like whether to skip class or go talk to your teacher about your project. In this workshop we talk about what self-esteem is, how it develops in us as children, ways it can be unwittingly damaged even by those who love us and what to do about it now. Learn to feel good about yourself and make wise decisions for your college and life success.
